  • Newsday Highlights Soccer, Field Hockey, and Volleyball Student-Athletes

MEDFORD, NEW YORK (NOVEMBER 2023) — In the midst of an exciting fall sports season for Patchogue-Medford High School teams, four student-athletes were named to their respective sports’ top athlete lists on Newsday. These athletes include Boys Varsity Soccer goalie Logan Guzik and midfielder Andrew Tapia, Varsity Field Hockey midfielder Rylee Wassmer, and Boys Varsity Volleyball outside hitter Julian Frey. All four of these student-athletes are seniors.

“We are incredibly proud of our gifted student-athletes for this accomplishment,” said Patchogue-Medford School District Superintendent Dr. Donna Jones. “The work ethic we instill into each of our students is on full display with these four scholars as they strive and succeed in the classroom and on the field and court.”

The students received this prestigious designation based on their successful 2022 seasons and projections for achievement and growth in their 2023 seasons. In 2022, Logan posted six shutouts and allowed only one goal in five other games in goal for the Boys Varsity Soccer Team. During that same season, Andrew tallied five goals and five assists, showcasing his playmaking abilities and field vision. Rylee has been a centerpiece of the Varsity Field Hockey team with her excellent stickwork and clearing, scoring 11 goals along with two assists in the 2022 season. Julian’s impressive 2022 statistics stand out as well, as he totaled 138 kills, 28 blocks, 22 digs and 16 aces.

The skills of these athletes only grew throughout their 2023 regular season campaigns. Logan posted seven shutouts, and Andrew tallied three goals and nine assists. Rylee scored 14 goals and four assists, while Julian finished sixth in kills in Suffolk County, with a total of 253.
