For students interested in a career in Cosmetology, this course provides an opportunity to learn about various aspects of work in the beauty industry. Among the units to be covered are Infection Control, Principles and Practices, Basics of Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, Scalp Care, Shampooing and Conditioning, Hairstyling, Haircutting, Hair Coloring, and Bleaching and Chemical Texture Services, Histology of Skin, Theory of Massage, Facials and Makeup, Nail Care, Manicuring, Pedicuring, Nail Extensions. Additionally, this course covers the types of technology applied in cosmetology and careers that can be pursued further within the beauty industry.
Students will acquire skills through hands-on learning experiences in haircutting/barbering, hair coloring, hairstyling, hair styling artistry, and nail care. Students will be instructed in anatomy, physiology, chemistry, sterilization, and customer service practices. Students will be prepared to take the NYS License examination to seek employment in the cosmetology industry. The curriculum is presented through classroom instruction, computer-based learning, practical applications with many guest speakers, demonstrations, field trips, and opportunities to experience the field of cosmetology working with professionals licensed in the industry.
This course will require students to attend the class for three periods every day during the two-year sequence. All students require 1000 hours to be eligible to sit for the New York State Cosmetology Licensing Exam. All students must complete the course application and submit it to their guidance counselor if interested in registering for the course.
Students in the cosmetology course are responsible for purchasing their own cosmetology kits valued between $340-$400.
