    We will empower students to use the skills they have learned; to take risks without fear of judgment; to become confident multilingual communicators and achieve their potential as global citizens.

    We will do this by:

    • providing a language rich experience where they feel accepted and take pride in their culture
    • supplying students with the tools they need to succeed and meet their goals
    • providing a safe, nurturing, and supportive academic environment

    • building relationships with families by facilitating access to their child’s education

  • English as a New Language (ENL) programs provide instruction in English with home language support, emphasizing English language acquisition. Students in ENL programs can come from many different language backgrounds, and English may be the only common language among the students. As per CR Part 154, there are two types of ENL components: 

    Stand-Alone ENL: Students receive English language development instruction taught by a New York State certified ESOL teacher. Students acquire the English language needed for success in core content areas (English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and/or Mathematics). Stand-Alone ENL is a separate time devoted to English language acquisition and English language development. The required amount of stand-alone ENL instruction depends on the English proficiency level of each student.  

    Integrated ENL: Students receive core content area (English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and/or Mathematics) and English language development instruction including home language supports and appropriate ELL scaffolds. Integrated ENL along with the subject area are taught by a New York State certified ESOL teacher and a New York State certified Common Branch (K-6) teacher or a teacher that is dually certified. The length of instruction depends upon the student’s proficiency level. The English Language Proficiency levels are: Entering, Emerging, Transitioning, Expanding and Commanding. In order for a child to exit the ENL program he/she must score an English proficiency level of Commanding on the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) or a level of Expanding and a 3 or 4 on the English Language Arts (ELA) assessment.  

    Inglés Como Nuevo Idioma: Los programas de inglés como nuevo idioma (ENL) brindan instrucción en inglés con apoyo en el idioma del hogar, enfatizando a la adquisición del idioma inglés. Los estudiantes en los programas de ENL pueden provenir de diferentes contextos lingüísticos, y el inglés puede ser el único idioma común entre los estudiantes. Según CR Parte 154, hay dos tipos de componentes ENL: 

    ENL Independiente: Los estudiantes adquieren el idioma inglés necesario para tener éxito en las áreas de contenido (artes del idioma inglés, estudios sociales, ciencias y/o matemáticas). Stand-Alone ENL (ENL independiente) es un tiempo separado dedicado a la adquisición del idioma inglés y al desarrollo. La cantidad requerida de instrucción ENL individual depende del nivel del dominio del inglés. Los estudiantes reciben instrucción de desarrollo del idioma inglés impartida por un maestro que tiene el ESOL certificado por el estado de Nueva York.  

    ENL Integrado: Los estudiantes reciben áreas de contenido (artes del idioma inglés, estudios sociales, ciencias y/o matemáticas) e instrucción de desarrollo del idioma inglés, incluye apoyo en el idioma del hogar y el soporte ELL apropiados. El ENL integrado junto con la materia son enseñados por un maestro de ESOL certificado por el estado de Nueva York y un maestro certificado por educación general (K-6) por el estado de Nueva York o un maestro con doble certificación. La duración de la instrucción depende del nivel de dominio del estudiante. Los niveles de dominio del idioma inglés son: entrante, emergente, en transición, en expansión y dominante. Para que un niño salga del programa ENL, debe obtener un nivel de dominio en inglés Dominante en la Prueba de rendimiento de inglés como segundo idioma del estado de Nueva York (NYSESLAT) o un nivel de Expansión y un 3 o 4 en Artes del idioma inglés (ELA) evaluación.

  • Dual Language Vision and Mission 


    Dual Language is meant to broaden the lives and perspectives of all our students. The values of the dual language program encompass bilingualism, biliteracy and cultural competency. Dual Language creates an empowering, diverse, and confident emergent bilingual community which fosters lifelong learners.

    The Patchogue Medford Dual Language program prides itself on being an academically challenging, culturally responsive, and linguistically rich. We are committed to providing a safe, nurturing environment that prepares our scholars to participate successfully in our diverse society. Our goal is for our scholars to attain the Seal of Biliteracy that will provide ample opportunities for college and career. 

    The Dual Language Program (DL) represents an innovative approach to education whereby students learn all curricular areas in TWO languages. The Patchogue-Medford School District DL Program serves both the English dominant and Spanish dominant student.  
     
    Goals of our program:  
    • Promote educational excellence for all student 
    • Foster the development of bilingual, bicultural, and biliterate individuals 
    • Promote multicultural awareness 
    • Provide high-quality instruction in TWO languages that supports students in demonstrating mastery in all of the core subjects 
    • Provide an academically challenging curriculum 
    • Encourage all parents to become active partners in their child’s education 

    Our Bilingual Programs serve youngsters in kindergarten through fifth grade at: 
    • Bay Elementary (K-5 DL) 
    • Canaan Elementary (K-5 DL) 
    • Eagle Elementary (K-5 DL) 
    • Medford Elementary (K-5 DL & 3/4 Newcomer Program-Transitional Bilingual)

    Side-by-Side Dual Language (DL) is comprised of English and Spanish dominant children, each receiving instruction both in their Native and New Languages. English instruction is provided by an English-speaking classroom teacher and Spanish instruction by a bilingual teacher. 

    Newcomer Program (TBE) provides English Language Learners with high-quality instruction in both their native and new language simultaneously while promoting cultural awareness and support until students are ready to be mainstreamed into English-only classes. 
     
    El Programa de Lenguaje Dual (DL) representa un enfoque innovador, mediante el cual los estudiantes aprenden todas las áreas curriculares en DOS idiomas. El Programa DL del Distrito Escolar de Patchogue-Medford atiende tanto a los estudiantes que dominan el inglés como los que dominan el español. 
     
    Objetivos de nuestro programa: 
    • Promover la excelencia educativa para todos los estudiantes. 
    • Fomentar el desarrollo de personas bilingües, biculturales y bialfabetizadas 
    • Promover la conciencia multicultural 
    • Brindar instrucción de alta calidad en DOS idiomas que ayude a los estudiantes a demostrar dominio en todas las materias  
    • Proporcionar un plan de estudios académicamente desafiante. 
    • Anima a todos los padres a convertirse en socios activos en la educación de sus hijos.
