English as a New Language/Bilingual Programs

  • English as a New Language Program

Available at Barton Elementary (Grades K-5), River Elementary (Grades K-5), and Tremont Elementary (Grades K-5)

The English as a New Language (ENL) program in elementary schools supports students whose first language is not English. The program focuses on developing English proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing while helping students succeed in academic subjects like math and science.

ENL instruction is provided through both stand-alone classes and integrated lessons within the regular classroom. The program also emphasizes cultural competency, helping students adjust to life in the U.S. while valuing their home languages and cultures. Students remain in the ENL program until they achieve the language skills needed to thrive in mainstream classes.

    Transitional Bilingual Education Program

Available at Medford Elementary (Grades 4/5)

The Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) program provides students who share the same home language the opportunity to learn English while continuing to build their academic skills in their native language. Students use their home language to make progress in all subjects as they gradually acquire English proficiency.

The goal of the TBE program is to help students smoothly transition to an all-English classroom setting once they are proficient in English. Although English instruction increases over time, students in a TBE program will always receive support in their home language, allowing them to develop bilingual skills as they grow academically.

    Dual Language Program (English/Spanish)

Available at Bay Elementary (Grades K-5), Canaan Elementary (Grades K-5), Eagle Elementary (Grades K-5), and Medford Elementary (Grades K-5)

Our Dual Language program offers students the unique opportunity to become fluent in both English and Spanish. Starting from a young age, students receive instruction in both languages, enabling them to develop strong academic skills while becoming bilingual and biliterate.

In this program, students learn to read, write, and speak in both English and Spanish through a curriculum that values cultural diversity and fosters a deep understanding of both languages. The goal is to create confident, bilingual learners who are well-prepared for future academic and personal success.
