• Medford Elementary School Becomes Big Top with the National Circus Project

Students Perform Juggling, Stilt Walking, and Additional Circus Skills

MEDFORD, NEW YORK (JULY 2024)—Medford Elementary School was visited by the National Circus Project for a week spent exploring fascinating big-top skills and performing on the final day. All Medford students, from kindergarten through fifth grade, participated in this enjoyable physical education opportunity.

“The National Circus Project brought incredible value to our scholars, bolstering their self-confidence, engaging with fitness, and instilling a sense of teamwork and perseverance,” said Medford Elementary School Principal Dr. Sharon Deland. “Through energizing and dynamic circus arts, our students discovered hidden talents and gained confidence, enriching their educational experiences in unforgettable ways.”

The National Circus Project, founded in 1984, is a nonprofit educational organization that incorporates physical education activities with a circus theme into a cultural arts opportunity. According to the National Circus Project website, the organization has led workshops and programs for over 7 million participants across the United States and in China, England, Russia, and Singapore.

As part of this physical education unit, Medford Elementary School students learned basic circus skills, including juggling, stilt walking, balance techniques, and diabolo tossing in a safe and organized environment. Fifth-grade students selected one of the skills they practiced and performed it on the final day of the program.

“Medford Elementary School extends gratitude to the National Circus Project for facilitating this meaningful experience,” said Dr. Deland. “We also thank our PTA for its fundraising efforts that made this extraordinary opportunity possible for our students.”
