National Junior
Honor Society
The National Junior Honor Society was founded to recognize
and encourage academic achievement and development of characteristics
essential to being a productive democratic citizen. It is a service
organization comprised of exceptional students who enrich the school
community by participating in volunteer activities. Examples would
be Peer Tutoring, Raising money for UNICEF and other worthy causes,
New Student Orientation, and Community Food Drive. To become a member
of N.J.H.S., one must posses five characteristics: Scholarship,
Character, Service, Leadership, and Citizenship. Most importantly,
members must want to help people and work hard. Students who meet
the below criteria are considered for membership by the faculty
council in May.
The student who exemplifies scholarship:
- Must have a cumulative scholastic average(overall) of at least
90% as a member of the 7th, 8th, or 9th grade class
The student of character:
- Takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously
- Consistently exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior (cheerfulness,
friendliness, poise, stability)
- Demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and reliability
- Shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others
The student who exercises leadership:
- Demonstrates leadership in promoting school activities
- Exercises influence on peers in upholding school ideals
- Successfully holds school office, or positions of responsibility,
is reliable and dependable
at least one leadership activity is required
The student who demonstrates citizenship:
- Understands the importance of civic involvement and participation
- Has a high regard for freedom, justice, and fellow human beings
- Demonstrates mature participation and responsibility through
involvement in such activities as scouting, community organizations,
and school clubs
The student who demonstrates service:
- faithfully attends to family duties
- participates in outside activities such as Girl Scouts, Boy
Scouts, church or community groups, volunteers for the aged,
poor, or disadvantaged
- is willing to use his/her talents and skills for the improvement
of society
at least two service activities are required
Students who qualify academically are notified after the 2nd quarter.
Applications are distributed, and a faculty committee makes the
selections. Students and parents are notified either way. The induction
ceremony takes place in June.
Students interested in applying for membership can
participate in certain NJHS sponsored activities such as: UNICEF,
FOOD DRIVE, OPERATION DEAR ABBY, PEER TUTORING and other programs
opened up to the student body. Students are also encouraged to get
involved with their grades student council as an officer, homeroom
representative, or volunteer.
