RIVER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Est. 1925

Welcome to the River Elementary School in the village of
Patchogue, New York.

Ours is a school comprised of 335 students and 31 teachers. Although it is the smallest of seven elementary schools in the Patchogue-Medford School District, it is the most historic and culturally diverse. More than 20 % our of students are English Language Learners, representing 12 different countries including Ecuador, Domenica, Columbia, Poland, Puerto Rico, Pakistan, El Salvador, Peru, Russia, Mexico, and others. Several members of our student population are from families boasting several generations of River Graduates. Nearly 20 % of the recent graduating class were third and fourth generation River families.

The River community is proud of its heritage and the diverse cultures that make up the student body. The instructional program is a result of innovative staff development facilitated by experts in the fields of reading, writing, Inclusion and pupil services, and technology. Our teachers host visitations from teachers in school districts across Long Island and New York City. Meaningful discussions about student achievement, reading, and differentiated instruction are common elements of the daily Professional Development Period in our school. The result is an engaging program that is supported by current scientific research and the community.

River students perform at the same standard or higher on state assessments when compared to similar schools. Children in Kindergarten through grade five, receive over 90 minutes of daily reading and writing instruction as part of the Patchogue-Medford Literacy Initiative. Instruction in Music, Physical Education, Art, library, and DARE, as well as participation in Band, Orchestra and a variety of extra-curricular activities provide for an enriching student schedule. The clubs and activities that children may select before and after school include; Intramural sports, Just Say No, Puppetry Club, Spotlight on Children, Math Olympiad, School Store and Peer Leaders.

I look forward to a rewarding experience this year with all of the students, families, staff and community.  As a former Patchogue-Medford graduate I am very excited to be "home" and being a part of the community I grew up in.  I am looking forward to seeing everyone and please remember that you can email me at kmalone@pmschools.org or call me at 631-687-8350. I hope everyone is enjoying the summer months and I will see you in September.
