Mrs. Soldano's and Mr. Shaw's fifth grade math and science classes participated in a videoconferencing session with NASA entitled, "Moon, Mars and Beyond." Each class was organized into 5 planet teams to help NASA locate and rescue a lost space ship that was orbiting one of the outer planets. Each planet team consisted of Cargo, Navigation and Transmissions Specialists. The Cargo Specialists calculated the number of days for a round trip to their planet and the amount of food, water and oxygen needed for the rescue trip. The Navigation Specialists plotted coordinates to help get some location information on the lost space ship. The Transmissions Specialists decoded messages which gave them clues about the location of the space ship over the last 5 days. All teams worked together using information they received to determine where the lost ship was located. The Communications Team relayed all information to Mission Control so that a rescue ship with all the loaded cargo could be launched from our base on Mars to that planet. The class located and rescued the lost ship, which was located orbiting around Saturn. Mission complete!
