14th Annual Long Island Pi Day Exhibition and Contest

Congratulations to Mrs.
Kocivar's fourth grade class! They took first place in the intermediate
category
at the 14th Annual Long Island Pi Day Exhibition and Contest for their pattern
poetry.
With the help of Mrs. Piecora, Patchogue-Medford's elementary schools'
math specialist,
the students crafted a poem with "patterns" as its theme.
In addition to taking first place, Mrs. MacDevitt's fourth grade class walked
away
with second place in the same category.
Keep on writing!
A World Without Patterns
written by Mrs. Kocivar's fourth grade class
Imagine a world without patterns:
No rhythm of a drum,
No music or sound,
No stripes on my clothes.
Will the world still go round?
No changing colors of the leaves,
No pitter-patter of the rain,
No rhythm of the brooms sweeping the streets.
No symmetry to the flowers.
No order of a rainbow,
No kids playing on a checkerboard with black and white squares.
No music of the cars beeping.
No shoes in pairs.
No hexagons on a turtle's shell,
No black and yellow pattern on bees,
No repeating train noise,
No more math for me!
No time schedule for doctors to see their patients,
No stripes on a cat...
Wouldn't it be awful to live like that?
