TITLE: IMMIGRATION/ ANCESTORS

GRADE LEVEL: 4
 

OBJECTIVE: Using the technology available to students and teachers in the

Patchogue -Medford School District, Students Will Be Able To
 

· Use a variety of Strategies to Increase Vocabulary

· Use a variety of Strategies to Identify Unknown Words

· Acquire information from Appropriate Children's Sources

· With assistance, select and use appropriate strategies for collecting, organizing, and aggregating information

· Identify the method used to organize information

· Formulate own questions prior to reading

· Gather and interpret information from children's reference books, magazines, textbooks, electronic bulletin boards, audio and media presentations, oral interviews, and from such forms as charts, graphs, maps and diagrams

· Select information appropriate to the purpose of their investigation and relate ideas from one text to another

· Interpret information found on subject

· Discriminate between important and unimportant information

· Organize material into coherent structure

· Be aware of cultural diversity of Long Island and New York

· Communicate ideas clearly by writing and presenting detailed reports to convey a clear understanding if topics requiring some research

Social Studies Standard 2

Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in world history and examine the broad sweep of history from a variety of perspectives.
 

Procedure:
 

1. Group children in teams of two to four students for investigative project

2. Coordinate assignment with librarian in the elementary building

3. Organize students according to assignments

4. With two students per computer, students will access the Internet to read for information

5. Students will have agreed upon period of time at library and computers to complete assignment

6. Students will enter the Internet through the Internet book on the School Vista bookshelf

7. Students will click on [N] in upper left hand corner of screen

8. Students will type in safe site addresses of search engines necessary for completion of task

9. Students will record answers on teacher generated sheet

10. Students will learn concepts related to the organization of information

11. Students will write and present detailed reports to convey a clear understanding of topics requiring the use of a variety of resources

12. Students will demonstrate control over basic writing conventions

13. Students will document sources in a bibliography

14. Students will create visual aides, including the use of the digital camera and scanning software, that support the information included in their report or presentation

15. Students will listen attentively and build on others ideas in a conversation or discussion
 
 
 

Evaluation
 

Students will complete assignment on time

Students will generate report using interviews, books and Internet resources

Students will present completed research project using at least three sources

Students will incorporate the use of the digital camera or scanning device into their project
