IMMERSION IN WORD PROBLEMS/MATH

GRADE LEVEL: 3
 

OBJECTIVE: Using the technology available to students and teachers in the

Patchogue -Medford School District, Students Will Be Able To
 

· Access the Internet using e-mail

· Gather and interpret information from children's reference books, magazines, textbooks, electronic bulletin boards, audio and media presentations, oral interviews, and from such forms as charts, graphs, maps and diagrams

· Select information appropriate to the purpose of their investigation and relate ideas from one text to another

· Interpret information found on subject

· Discriminate between important and unimportant information

· Students will explore using models as a problem solving strategy

· Explore using a plan as a problem solving strategy

Procedure:

1. Group children in teams of four to six students for center work

2. Organize students according to assignments

3. With two students per computer, students will access the Internet to read for information

4. Students will choose one page of Math stories

5. Students will cooperatively print and answer questions chosen at site for Mathstories

6. Students will have agreed upon period of time at each Center to complete assignment

7. Students will enter the Internet through the Internet book on the School Vista bookshelf

8. Students will click on the left hand box, the Read mail box

9. Students will click on READ at the bottom of the screen

10. Students will click on the paper clip in the upper right hand corner of the screen to access sites

11. Students will resume Internet work in groups, answering questions at MonsterMath site
 
 
 

Evaluation
 

Students will complete assignment in agreed period of time

Students will present completed assignment and use in peer mentoring sessions with teammates
